Pongala Payasam Recipe

Ingredients

Raw rice                    1 cup

Grated Jaggery        3/4 to 1 cup

Ghee                         3 tablespoons

Grated Coconut        1/2 cup

Water                         4.5 cups, usually we don’t measure

Cardamom pods       6, peeled and crushed

Banana                      1, cut into thin slices

Honey                        2 tablespoons

Preparation

Devotees typically start the day with a traditional bath and offer the daily prayers lighting the vilakku(lamp).

Pray to Lord Ganesha and Devi and using the flame from the vilakku, light the stove (in case of gas stove) for preparing Pongala. Use an earthen cooking pot that is decorated nicely.

  • Boil water in a pot
  • Wash the rice well
  • Once the water boils, take a little rice in the hand, pray, do 3 rounds (uzhiyal) around the pot and add to the boiling water
  • Add the rest of the rice to the pot
  • Do not stir till the rice boils over
  • Now stir it well and let it cook
  • Once the rice is cooked, add grated jaggery and mix well
  • Add coconut, cardamom and ghee and keep stirring till everything gets mixed well, followed by honey
  • Once the stove is turned off, add sliced banana
